Beach cottage makeover

BACKSTORY:  Each project gets a nickname. It just happens, it's organic.  This one:  the sweet little money pit.

The beach cottage wasn’t a bargain.  But the sellers had loved the place, and for years filled it with friends and family.  It was steps to the beach.  The energy in the space was beautiful.

But the kitchen was not….to the taste of the new owners. Everything had to go.  For $10,000—max.

The before.

The goal: open up the kitchen to the rest of the cottage while maximizing storage and creating a funky colorful beach vibe.

The after:

Open up wall and create seating at counter.

Installing tall storage cabinets on the back wall created loads of storage for dishes and pantry items without impeding the flow.  The frosted glass doors reflect light.

Tips for a kitchen reno on a budget:

Ikea cabinets.  Yes, they work well, and are indeed very durable. I’ve used them on dozens of projects, and Ikea cabs are one of designers little secrets. Designer tip:  If you want to upgrade the cabinet fronts, check out this site: semihandmadedoors.com

Backsplash.  With no cash to invest in luxe countertops a backsplash is the best way to maximize your buck. Here I used pool tiles—super durable, great looking and inexpensive.

Designer tip: Hakati.com. (BTW. I don’t get paid by any of these vendors.  I’m sure they have no clue I’m even writing about my sources.  I just believe in passing on what works. Let’s share!)
